Men and Equal Pay
The law on equal pay does not just affect women. All of the principles of equal pay that appear on the page Do I have an Equal Pay Claim? apply to both men and women. ‘Piggy-back’ claimsIn most cases it is female dominated job roles, such as Care or Catering Assistants, that are found to have been underpaid, however, occasionally men work in these roles too. These male workers are also entitled to make a claim under the Equal Pay Act. If their female colleagues bring a successful claim their pay will be increased. Then the men may find that they can make an equal pay claim using the female colleagues who have taken action as comparators. Hence, they are called piggy-back claims.Individual ClaimsThe situation may arise where a male employee is found to have been paid less than a female individual doing a job of equal worth. You would be able to take a claim forward for the same reasons as are listed on Do I have an equal pay claim? If you are male and believe that you have been underpaid in comparison to a female please contact Leigh Day & Co on 0800 037 4045.
