How to find out if you are underpaid

There are various ways that you might find out that you are being paid unfairly:

• By accident: some people find out in conversation that there is a difference between their own salary and that of their colleague’s.

• Job advertisements: your employer may advertise a position that you previously held at a higher rate of pay than you received.

• After a job evaluation scheme: your employer sends you a letter stating that you may have been underpaid and offering you a lump sum of money or a pay rise.   (Find out what you are entitled to before accepting their offer).
